Ohio Congressman and Democratic Presidential candidate Dennis J. Kucinich has been a champion of the environment for more than 35 years, dating back to his years as a Cleveland (OH) City Councilman, when he helped draft the city’s first major air quality law. His election as Mayor of Cleveland in 1977, at the age of 31, attracted national and international attention; and it gave him an even larger platform to promote environmental protection issues. Later, as a State Senator, and since 1996, as a member of the U.S. of Representatives, he has challenged the nuclear power industry, authored and promoted programs for alternative and sustainable energy. As a congressional representative to the global climate treaty talks, Congressman Kucinich encouraged America to lead the way toward a sustainable, shared stewardship of the planet through carbon reduction, and investment in alternative energy technologies. He is the only candidate for President who voted against the original Iraq war authorization in 2002 and every funding appropriation since. Also, he has co-sponsored a bill for a national universal health care program for all Americans, sponsored a bill to create a Cabinet-level Department of Peace, supports the Kyoto Climate Change Treaty, and has opposed Foreign Trade agreements such as NAFTA. In 2004, as a candidate for the Democratic Presidential nomination, he campaigned in all 50 states and U.S. territories and was the last Democratic candidate to withdraw from the race after all of the primaries and caucuses were concluded.
